Bob Montgomery Death Broome Australia Obituary: Bob Montgomery Dies at 82 After 5,290km MND Charity Ride

Bob Montgomery spent his final days doing what had come to define so much of his life: riding for others. At 82, the former NSW state cyclist completed an extraordinary journey from Broome in Western Australia to Bowral in New South Wales, covering about 5,290 kilometers alongside his 18-year-old grandson, Tom Malcolm.

The six-week challenge, called “One Last Ride,” was Bob’s sixth long-distance fundraising ride and supported Motor Neurone Disease NSW, a cause deeply personal to him. His cousin, Judith O’Brien, died from MND, inspiring Bob’s longstanding commitment to raising awareness and funds for people and families affected by the disease. Before his final journey, he had raised more than $200,000 through his cycling efforts.

Bob and Tom were welcomed home by family, friends, and supporters after completing the remarkable ride. But the celebration soon turned to grief. Bob died unexpectedly the following day after a medical episode while returning from a function in Sydney. Current reports say emergency services treated him before he was taken to St. George Hospital, where he later died.

His wife, Jenny, was by his side, while his family described him as a “beautiful soul.” MND NSW remembered Bob as a cherished friend and tireless supporter whose dedication helped bring practical support and hope to families living with MND.

Bob Montgomery leaves behind more than kilometers ridden or money raised. His final ride became a powerful testament to courage, family, and compassion—a legacy that will continue wherever people choose to help others.
