Joan Milburn Obituary, President, and supporter of Vision Support Barrow & District Passed Away
Everyone at Vision Support Barrow & District is profoundly saddened by the passing of our President, and life-long supporter, service-user, and friend, Joan Milburn. Her departure leaves a quiet but immense space within our charity, one filled for so many years by her unwavering dedication, gentle strength, and profound wisdom.

Joan was far more than a title; she was the very heartbeat of our community. As a tireless advocate for the visually impaired, she championed dignity, independence, and understanding with a quiet determination that inspired everyone she met. To staff and volunteers, she was a priceless source of knowledge, her insights shaped by decades of lived experience and compassionate observation. To fellow service-users, she was a guiding light—a proof that life with sight loss could be lived fully, with purpose and grace.
Within our centre, Joan’s presence was a constant reassurance. Every member of our VSBD family holds their own fond memories: a shared conversation over a cup of tea, her thoughtful advice during a challenging time, or the sound of her warm, encouraging laughter. These personal moments collectively paint a portrait of a remarkable woman who touched countless lives. We are all undeniably better for having known her.
Joan’s legacy is not one of grand gestures, but of countless small acts of kindness and steadfast support that strengthened the fabric of our community. It is a legacy that will continue to guide our work, reminding us always of the individual at the heart of our mission.
At this difficult time, the thoughts and deepest sympathies of every one of us are with Joan’s family and wide circle of friends. We share in your loss and hope you may find some comfort in knowing how deeply she was loved and respected by her extended family here. She will be so very sorely missed, but her light will never truly go out.
